- IntroPak Sign-on Change
- -----------------------
-
- Page 18: Sign-on procedure, The last step in the IntroPak sign-on
- must be changed so that the automatic setting of CompuServe
- defaults will work properly. After completing the sign-on, you're
- given the opportunity to log on (see last paragraph of the Example
- Sign-on Session that begins "You may now log on..."). You must
- enter your user ID and password at that point. At the first
- prompt when you are asked to "Press <CR>: " you must hold the
- Ctrl key and press <D>. This logs off and should hang up the
- phone. Then set your permanent account and temporary password
- in the <P>arameters and proceed with the setting of CompuServe
- Defaults as explained on page 20.
-
-
- Command Line Options
- --------------------
-
- TAPCIS can be given several different types of instructions as it is
- being booted from DOS. The syntax is:
-
- TAPCIS [X][-][B][Q][*][Wnn] [hh:mm]
-
- Translation:
-
- X : drop to DOS after first online session
- -- useful with unattended operation and some multi-taskers
-
- - : force small B-protocol packets
- -- if phone lines are very noisy, QuickB can actually take
- longer than the old B-protocol. This parameter forces
- 512-byte packets, cutting re-send time in half
-
- B : use a large block cursor in the editor to indicate insert
- mode
- -- default insert cursor is only slightly larger than
- overwrite cursor
-
- Q : run quiet -- no beeps ever
-
- * : first action -- may be R, O, M or N.
- -- R, O, N: same as main menu. M = main menu ctrl-O
-
- Wnn : set editor width
- -- of use only to overseas users who must pay for uploads
- based on the number of packets sent, as well as time. This
- makes it possible to specify a maximum line length within
- the packet size. nn = 24 to 79.
-
- hh:mm : start-up time, based on military hours.
- -- 07:00 is 7 AM; 23:45 is 11:45 PM.
-
- (L : previously needed for some networks. Tap 5.1 is smarter.)
-
- (D : previously needed for multitasking. Tap 5.1 is smarter.)
-
- Use as many or as few of these as you like. There should be a space
- after "TAPCIS". Then string together the commands, putting "Wnn" as
- the last, in the unlikely event you are using it. If you specify a
- start time, it must be separated by a single space from the command
- string.
-
- Examples: TAPCIS nx 6:45
- -- logs on at 6:45 AM and executes the N> main menu command,
- then drops to DOS
-
- TAPCIS OQ
- -- goes online immediately, bypassing the main menu, and
-
- performs all awaiting online actions. Beep is off.
-
- PLEASE NOTE: Unattended operation is not recommended. Although it is
- extremely unlikely, it is possible that with severe line noise, you
- could be locked online. This feature is provided for users'
- convenience and, although it works flawlessly for many, it cannot be
- guaranteed.
-
-
- F2 Search While Replying to Messages
- ------------------------------------
-
- A last-minute revision to TAPCIS 5.1b was to greatly enhance its search
- capabilities when you need to refer to another file while writing a
- message or a reply. Please disregard instructions in the
- documentation.
-
- Users of prior versions are encouraged to give this feature a workout.
- It has been so much improved that you should find the need to shell to
- DOS, and to use listing and cut and paste utilities, greatly reduced,
- if not eliminated.
-
- While writing, if you hit F2, you'll be prompted for a search string
- and the name of the file to search. You can use U> for the USERID.CIS
- file, M> for the current message file, or enter a path and file.
-
- TAPCIS will look for and display the first "hit", usually as the middle
- line, along with surrounding text. To import text into the message
- you're composing, hit the letters on the right side of the screen
- corresponding to the lines you want. Z> will import the entire screen.
-
- Hitting <Enter> will take you to the next and subsequent hits. F1
- ends the search and returns you to the editor.
-
- You can also scroll forward from that point a page at a time with PgDn
- or the down cursor. Each new page may be imported in whole or in part.
-
- Hitting PgUp or the up cursor takes you to the top of the file, where
- you can restart the search, page through the entire file, or start a
- new search using X> to change the search string.
-
-
- Telenet Network
- ---------------
-
- Telenet is one of the alternative networks that can be used, with a
- higher surcharge, with CompuServe. The one script file,
- TELENET.SCR, has been replaced with two Telenet scripts:
-
- TELE1200.SCR
- TELE2400.SCR
-
- Operation with Telenet at 1200 is automatic just as with other
- networks. At 2400 we have been unable to develop a script at this time
- that works reliably. If you must use Telenet at 2400bps, you will have
- to use some manual intervention.
-
- Set-up the telephone number and bps rate as normal for Telenet
- numbers (see page 11). Whenever TAP dials the phone, you'll need
- to manually get the attention of the Telenet node. On Hayes
- compatible modems, you'll see the CONNECT message on the screen.
- Wait a few seconds, then press the at-sign <@> followed by
- <enter>. Wait a few seconds. Telenet should respond with
- TERMINAL= and TAP will see that and take over. If Telenet does
- not respond (which happens all too often), you will need to repeat
- the <@> <enter> again.
-
-
- COM Port Setting
- ----------------
-
- o If you have one serial card or internal modem configured as COM2,
- TAPCIS may read it as COM1, since it is the first available port. With
- this configuration, try setting the C>om Port on the P>arameters page to
- COM1.
-
- o Some modems, notably ZOOM, cannot make a switch from 7 bits, even
- parity, 1 stop bit to the 8N1 required for protocol transfers. If the
- program refuses to do QuickB downloads, use I>nteractive to go online.
- G DEFAULT. Select Terminal Options. Set Parity to NONE. Do this at
- all baud rates you plan to use for TAPCIS. Then, on the P>arameters
- menu, set the C>om Port to the appropriate port at 8N1.
-
-
- zapcis to TAPCIS
- ----------------
-
- Refer to the file ZAPTAP.INF, part of TAPINF.ARC, which should be
- available where you downloaded this file.
-
- HELP!
- -----
-
- If you're stymied installing TAPCIS and getting it running for any
- reason (other than failure to read the documentation), help is readily
- available in many locations on CompuServe. The Support Group's 800
- number is not equipped to provide help, but the author and a huge number
- of users can be found on IBMCOM Section 3, WordPerfect Support Group
- (WPSG) Section 12, and CONSULT Section 4.
-
-
- E>dit from Main Menu
- --------------------
-
- The E>dit function permits you to use the versatile TAPCIS editor with
- many of the program's files, such as any .SND file or USERID.CIS.
- However, in this mode, TAPCIS does no error checking to make sure the
- file conforms to standards. For example, the instructions at the end of
- a message can get reformatted to the same line if you use ctrl-F2 or ^B.
-
- It's up to you, if you use this function, to be certain files are
- alright before saving them.
-
- Also, the editor at this point is screen-oriented. As a safeguard, when
- it stores the file, it adds a cr/lf pair to the end. For most files,
- this doesn't matter. However, if you see blank lines creeping into some
- files, such as USERID.CIS, this is the reason. They may safely be
- deleted on the next edit.
